Random Book Meme II: Electric Boogaloo

Jennifer tagged me with a meme, one I had answered before. But it's a fun one and worth repeating. You have to:
  • Grab the nearest book (Penthouse Forum doesn't count unless it's The Best of)
  • Turn to page 123
  • Look for the fifth sentence
  • Post the three sentences that follow that sentence
I was in my office while I did this, and here's what I grabbed:
All such agreements, though, need to be modified to reflect the particular allocation of responsibilities between editor and contributors. Alternatively, in appropriate circumstances, publishers can use simpler forms (such as that in fig. 4.3), closer in style to journal author forms (see fig. 4.2). Finally, it is possible to use work-made-for-hire agreements for all these persons, although that is the least common solution.
That exciting passage is from The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition. This illustrates why 1 in 1.7 editors at the Chicago Manual commit suicide, usually by slicing their wrists with razor-sharp ZZZZZZs.

Since this passage is a bit, shall we say, legal, I've taken the liberty of rewriting it in exciting action form. This is from Write Hard 5: Just Write Already, starring Bruce Willis as editor John McClane and the Chicago Manual of Style as Chicago

CHICAGO
Okay, McClane, you have to modify the agreement to reflect the particular allocation of responsibilities between the editor and the contributors.

MCCLANE
Damn it, Chicago, there's no time for that. The royalty agreements are too complicated. The book will be out by the time we get the agreements done.

CHICAGO
What about a simple agreement, like a journal author form.

McCLANE
That's too simple, we'll probably end up in litigation and the whole project will be lost.

CHICAGO
I don't know what else we can do!

McCLANE
Think, goddamnit! You've been through 15 editions, you have to know another way!

CHICAGO
Well...there is another solution. It's not very common....

McCLANE
Chicago, we are running out of time!

CHICAGO
Use work-made-for-hire agreements for all the contributors.

McCLANE
Work-made-for-higher agreements. Chicago, you're a genius!

CHICAGO
And McClane? When you're done, please kill me. Before I bore myself to death.

If you tag yourself too much, you’ll go blind

Blue Girl has this funky meme that seems tailor made for my blog. The idea is that you find five statements that, when typed into Google, list your blog as the number one hit.

Given the kind of search terms I find in my site meter, I thought this could be...enlightening. I also decided to up the degree of difficulty by not using “circle jerk” in the search, although the terms I did use showed the same level of charm, class, and sophistication.

5. mitt romney dry hump. I have to give credit to dooce for inspiration, because her blog was where I first read about what passes for a randy Friday night at BYU.

4. nipple nazi rat poison. This goes to The Lovely Becky’s favorite piece I’ve ever done. I was always sorry I never did another sketch show -- I would have loved to see this performed.

3. iraq quagmire ass bacon. It’s because I walk around with things like this in my head that I started this blog.

2. republicans longing clinton’s penis. Since I wrote this, the “clinton” part has really become superfluous.

1. girthy sodomizing tribulation. I’m not only number one for this term, I am the only result for this. That’s probably for the best.

The Mutated Gene Meme

Kathleen tags me with the most complicated meme in history:

There are a set of questions below that are all of the form, "The best [subgenre] [medium] in [genre] is…". Copy the questions, and before answering them, you may modify them in a limited way, carrying out no more than two of these operations:

— You can leave them exactly as is.

— You can delete any one question.

— You can mutate either the genre, medium, or subgenre of any one question. [For instance, you could change "The best time travel novel in SF/Fantasy is…" to "The best time travel novel in Westerns is…", or "The best time travel movie in SF/Fantasy is…", or "The best romance novel in SF/Fantasy is…".]

— You can add a completely new question of your choice to the end of the list, as long as it is still in the form "The best [subgenre] [medium] in [genre] is…".

You must have at least one question in your set, or you've gone extinct, and you must be able to answer it yourself, or you're not viable.

Then answer your possibly mutant set of questions. Please do include a link back to the blog you got them from, to simplify tracing the ancestry, and include these instructions.

Finally, pass it along to any number of your fellow bloggers. Remember, though, your success as a Darwinian replicator is going to be measured by the propagation of your variants, which is going to be a function of both the interest your well-honed questions generate and the number of successful attempts at reproducing them.

1. The best comedy in alternative universes is: Fox News. Sean Hannity, a scary DeVinci Code albino who says people are at war with Christmas, fembot and mandroid newscasters, Ann Coulter without irony, and Bill O'Reilly, all packaged by a greedy Australian.

2. The best sexy song in rock is: "Hot Girls in Love" by Loverboy. Headbands! Mullets! An album cover featuring a man's ass in red leather pants! And 100% Canadian! Yet they were hunted by many hot girls in love. That takes a special kind of sexy.

3. The best cult novel in absurdist fiction is: The Apprentice by Lewis "Scooter" Libby. A grown man named Scooter writes scenes of animal sex before working for a vice president who eats puppies.

4. The best Jim Varney movie in American film is: Slam Dunk Ernest/Ernest Scared Stoopid (tie). In the first film, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar plays an angel who teaches Ernest how to dunk. It's nice when the facts write the jokes for me.

5. The best use of ground meat in American cooking is: The Culver's Butterburger. In my heaven, these grow on trees, and in real life, every bite gets you that much closer to going to heaven.

6. The time-travel story in nonfiction is: The Republican Party national platform. Gays, back in the closet. Women, back in the kitchen. Hispanics, back in Hispanola. Blacks, back of the bus. Michael J. Fox and DeLorean sold separately.

In keeping with my actual biological status, I will be unable to pass the meme onto others. But with answers like these, it's probably for the good of the species.

Eight Is Enough to Fill My Blog With a Meme

I just flew in from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and boy are my arms tired!

I am back in The IC (for those of you scoring at home) after moving to the UP. The Lovely Becky and I have work stuff going on here this month, so even though we have obtained a new house in our new home town, we are back in our old home town for a couple of weeks, staying with our friends SER and BH and their new wee one, S-to-the-Ren. SER and BH demonstrated remarkable adorableness today by singing Beatles songs to S-t-t-R, including "I'm Only Sleeping" to put the little lad to sleep. Those are the sorts of things that maintain my faith in humanity.

While exhausting, the trip went pretty well. We took a couple days off to go to Lake Geneva for a quick, drunken vacation with TLB's college friends. The closing on the new house went smoothly, but the people we bought it from mistakenly thought they had a self-cleaning kitchen, because much of it looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the Iranian Hostage Crisis. We fought grease with elbow grease and managed to get the counters back to their natural white. I almost caused TLB to add coffee stains to the floor when I portrayed a character, Mr. Lightswitch, thanking me for cleaning him. Oh, thank you so much, I was trapped under all this grime, and now I can see again! I said in a squeaky voice. And thank you for cleaning my true love, the dishwasher! Yes, being married to me is the gift that keeps on giving.

Right before I began my four-state Upper Midwest tour, Jennifer had tagged me with a meme. I have to name eight (hopefully) interesting, random facts about me. I was dreaming when I wrote this, so please sue me if it goes astray....

1) When I was in seventh grade, I was in a group called The Glazed Chickens. Not a rock group. Not a comedy group. Just a group of dorks like me. There were seven of us, divided into ranks. The head guy was the Archgiglioid. My best friend Tom was the Vice Giglioid. I don't remember what my title was, which means it wasn't that good. The regular people outside the group were Sheep. People that we didn't like were either Sub-Sheep, Sub-She-Sheep, or Sub-She-Sheep-Execretement. At one point, our principal heard about us, and thought we were some kind of gang. She actually asked Tom about what we did, like we were running drugs or starting fights.

2) The gang thing was especially funny because the only thing The Glazed Chickens ever did, besides label people, was write The Joke Book. We had a green Mead notebook, emblazoned with our mascot, this goofy cartoon character called Derange-O the Clown, and we wrote every single joke the seven of us had ever heard. If they weren't directly lifted from books like Truly Tasteless Jokes, they were in that same vein. We categorized them by subject: Sex Jokes, Religious Jokes, Leper Jokes, and so on. We had a chapter on Helen Keller Jokes, and whenever Tom and I happen to mention The Joke Book, we always remember this joke:

What did Helen Keller say when someone gave her a cheese grater?

That's the most violent book I ever read.

I really wish I still had The Joke Book, but when the principal started investigating our gang activities, we destroyed it because we worried we would get suspended or expelled. Let's just say we weren't a very tough gang.

3) I once traveled from Iowa City to Virginia to see Rush in concert. It was the Rush 30th anniversary tour, and I wanted to go see them with Tom. We are both big Rush fans, so much so that no matter what song they would have played from the 17 albums they had released by that point, we probably would have known all of the words. Anyway, as we were enjoying the concert, I heard the first acoustic notes of "The Trees," one of their old classics and one of my favorites. As soon as I recognized it, I let out a very loud, "Fuck yeah!"

Tom, every bit as much of a Rush nerd as I am, turned to me and asked, "Did you just say, 'Fuck yeah'?" As if he was asking me if I had just wet myself.

"Yeah," I replied meekly. At least my pants were dry.

4) I have gone skinny dipping twice. The first time was in high school in San Diego. My friends and I were at a party at Mission Beach. One very drunk friend suggested that the group of us -- five guys -- go swimming. Naked. We had to be hammered because, despite being at an age where guys are very wary about appearing "gay," the suggestion didn't sound the least bit gay to us. Off we went, off came the clothes, and we jumped in the water and swam around for a bit. After about a half hour, we headed back to the party, our clothes sticking to us because we had not thought about drying off ahead of time. In the interim, the police had shown up and busted up the party, throwing some of the drunker kids into the backs of the squad cars. Our little naked excursion had probably saved us from getting busted.

The second time, TLB and I were at a wedding in Tampa with a bunch of her friends from college. We were all staying at a hotel right on the beach. One friend in particular, Todd, was always promoting some type of nude activity. The combination of booze, post-college nostalgia, and beach led to all of us taking him up on an offer to go skinny dipping. About a dozen of us stripped and piled into the water under the moonlight. Todd, however, thought TLB had kept on her swimsuit and called her on it. My quite naked wife bounced up above the water line and said, "Do these look like a swimsuit to you?" That's just one reason (or is it two?) that she's my soul mate.

5) I have alluded to this before, but never fully confessed it: I was a pretty serious Republican until the 1992 election. All through high school, I was a staunch Reagan supporter, and in fact got pretty annoyed with TLB when she would wear her "I survived the Reagan Administration" button on her jacket. I once got into an argument with a very liberal friend about how China's human rights record should not affect its Most Favored Nation trading status. I voted for Bush in 1988.

So what turned me around? A lot of things, such as studying the CIA in grad school and living in New York City. But honestly, it was when I realized that the Republican Party was the party of John Lithgow in Footloose, and I would much rather be Kevin Bacon, driving around while cranking Quiet Riot and trying to get it on with the preacher's daughter.

6) I have never seen The Godfather. I really don't know why, but it's my biggest popular culture gap.

7) I went through the Second City comedy writing program in Chicago. For a year, my classmates and I wrote sketches each week and brought them in, eventually using our best stuff to create a show that students in the acting/improv program performed. Pack for the Afterlife was the closing sketch and song for the show, and hearing people laugh at my stuff was one of the greatest feelings I've ever had.

8) Circle Jerk at the Square Dance was originally the title of a novel I was writing, about a group of people putting on a sketch comedy show. The structure allowed me to insert sketches into the story, such as The Osbournes Animal Planet. I eventually reached a point where I realized the novel was never going to work, got very depressed about ditching the novel, and wound up not writing for a while. The wise TLB suggested I start a blog, partly as an outlet for the comedy bits that filter through my head, but also to get me out of my creative funk. I struggled with what to call it, until she said, "You should call it Circle Jerk at the Square Dance."

You see, I married her for her mind as much as her moonlit bosoms.

I'm not going to tag anyone since so many have done this one. Back with a Top Ten on Tuesday, and hopefully a couple new sketches I thought of while I was on the road.

Do you like it when I tag you?

Her Blueness tagged me like an endangered species under observation with this meme. Some people hate these things, but I love the sound of my own typing, so I'm always happy to babble about anything. And after spending all weekend talking about housing disclosures and opening bids and just how much goddamned snow they get in Marquette, talking about pork is refreshing.

1. What's in your pocket?
A lion, and baby, he is ready 2 roar.

2. Is the pork ready?
It is if it has stopped squealing.

3. Have you ever had to rock to and fro to make your poopie go?
Thankfully, no. But this question reminded me of an incident when I was a teenager. I came down with pneumonia and had to go to the hospital. While I was waiting in a bed to get examined, an older woman next to me was talking with a doctor about the impacted stool she had. That’s when I asked God: please, please, let me be able to poop on my own for the rest of my life.

4. Do you like onions?
The better question would be: do I like vile weeds that taste like ass? No.

5. So, how big is it?
Let’s put it this way: if they had a pill that really made it bigger, I would line up for a prescription. Of course, so would 99% of the male population.

6. Budweiser or real beer?
Real beer. But I’m not a beer slob. A good ol’ fashioned American macrobrew can really hit the spot. Miller High Life, for instance, is my go-to rock show beer of choice. But when it's time to really drink beer, I need something that has actual flavor. Like this, which I usually drink on my birthday when I can find it.

7. What do you feel about your nose?
I wish the I could switch size ratios with it and the object from question 5.

8. Children: Baked or broiled?
I wasn’t sure how to answer this, so I asked an expert. Here’s the response I got:
Dear Citizen,

Thank you for your question. The answer is baked, with a garnishing of puppies.

Sincerely,

Vice President Richard Cheney
9. Do you like it when I do this?
Yes, but this time, please don’t forget the safe word.

10. Do you like the sound of chickens?
No. Especially when they are clucking beside the red wheel barrow.

11. Would Beyoncé clip her own toenails?
No way. The first rule of Diva Club is that you do not talk about Diva Club. The second rule of Diva Club is that you, under no circumstances, groom yourself. Diva preparation is like building a car: everyone has an assigned part to assemble.

12. Do you like pork?
Does the Pope where a funny hat when he strikes down the concept of Limbo?

13. If the butter is soft, does the bus arrive on time?
No, because clearly the driver’s muffins were in the toaster.

14. When do you get up?
When The Man tells me too.

15. How did you survive childhood?
I made my saving throw.

16. What do you do before bed?
That depends on TLB.

17. What are your hidden charges?
It’s $4.95 for the first minute, and $1.95 for each additional minute, minimum of ten minutes or the first three times I say engorged. If you’re under 18 and did not get your parents’ permission, that’s a paddling. Tax and title are not included unless you’re paying cash, in which case, I’ll waive them if you get rid of what’s in the trunk. For the first six months, you pay 0% APR on all non-purchases, but twice the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow on all other transactions.

18. Who's behind you?
Satan, carrying a bag of Culver’s.

19. Why don't people go to the bathroom on TV?
Oh, they do. As Blue Girl pointed out, the spare a square episode is a classic example. But they even have the Charmin commercials built on the old saying, “Does a bear shit in the woods?” Sometimes I think we have gone too far.

20. What's a soylent green popsicle?
When the heat goes out at the retirement home.

21. What does it taste like?
Brylcreem and nostalgia.

22. Why doesn't Consumer Reports rate hookers?
Because they’re too busy crashing cars to stop and pick them up.

23. Does George Bush replace the toilet paper tube?
Not before he asks the CIA if it’s a nook-u-ler centrifuge that could be used to make WMD.
