I'm off to the beaches of North Carolina for the annual Beach Week With TLB's family. We drink beer, grill fish, drink more beer, try and teach people to play Texas Hold 'Em, scour the local sports section to see which Bears are already out for the season, and read a lot of books. And drink beer.

I have my notebook and some sketch ideas, so I shall return ready to dispense teh funny -- assuming the world doesn't end.

The date of this post confirms something I've suspected all weekend. Perhaps I can illuminate on something that may be puzzling you, although I'm sure you've had your suspicions.

Late morning on Saturday, I walked to your house, located and availed of the secret key, and sauntered in like I owned the place. I brought in your mail. I watered your plants. I sat on your couch reading your magazines. I admired a pair of shoes by the door and wondered if I might be able to figure out how to work your fabulous television. I covered every inch of the place looking for cat food--the kitchen, the pantry, the dining room, even the basement. I searched everywhere for a note of instructions. I called your cats silly little pet names at full volume. I came upon a cooler full of various bottles in your dining room and dishes in your sink, and noted aloud how out of character it was for you and TLB to leave for a week with these ends untied.

If I knew how to whistle, I'd have been whistling.

I returned Sunday morning with a bag of cat food and was confronted by more than a few changes: the plant I had watered and placed on your kitchen counter was perched once again on the refrigerator; the cooler and dishes were gone; the shoes I'd admired in the foyer were also gone; and most impossible to ignore were the bowls and bowls of water and cat food in the kitchen, and of course your lovely note.

One thing I am slow to do when faced with what seems impossible is blame myself, but clearly there had been a misunderstanding, and it had been my misunderstanding, and it was only by the grace of God that it led to no real incident or lasting awkwardness.

Suffice it to say that if you ever need a cat-sitter, just call on me and I'll be there--a day early.

Traca my dear, you are all the more confused...because that was Friday, not Saturday.

I wondered what was up with the plant and how the mail had got in the house, and then figured out you must have had your days mixed up.

On the plus side, I didn't have to water the plants before we left. Thanks mucho!

You are right! I was just coming back to fix that. It was Friday. And I did water the plants--all of the plants, including that cloth one on the kitchen window (it's dry now).

I can only imagine how confident you must feel leaving your home and beloved animals in my care....

I have the utmost confidence in you, or I would not have asked.

I hope you're staying's hotter there than it is "down south"!

What if AG and traca took over this blog? Do you think they will know?

p.s. can you get us some food from the fridge and we can throw a party?!
